Book Reviews – Carry On by Rainbow Rowell (Spoiler Free)

Title – Carry On

Author – Rainbow Rowell

Publisher – St. Martin’s Griffin

Genre – Young Adult, Romance

My Rating – 3/5

Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who’s ever been chosen.

That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.

Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here — it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

Carry On – The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is a ghost story, a love story and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story – but far, far more monsters.

A few days ago, I posted a review of Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Since there were a lot of mentions of Simon and Baz in it, I figured I’d give Carry On a shot.

The primary complaint that I seem to find online with this book is that it is a copy of Harry Potter. Somehow, I find that unfair. Sure yes most of the elements could be traced back to the Wizarding World and that made me read it kind of like a fanfiction but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was bad as such. Before I started reading the book itself, I decided not to corelate it with any of the Harry Potter elements.

All that being said, I still have given it 3 stars, which isn’t too great a rating in my book. I loved Baz as a character SO VERY MUCH! The remaining characters however were shallow and frankly boring. I could not relate to Simon one bit and found him plain whiny through most of the book. Most of the time, I was simply waiting for the parts narrated by Baz.

The supposed “twist” was quite predictable and the end was a let down. The only reason I gave Carry On 3 stars is Baz! I wish there were more characters like Baz in books because he was So. Freaking. Perfect. (Literally cannot overstate how much I loved Baz at this point.

And that’s all for today. Hope you have a great day! Until next time
