Goodreads LinkLouisa Clark is an ordinary young woman living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has never been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex-Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair-bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he’s pretty sure he cannot live the way he is.

Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living.

A love story for this generation, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?

In all honesty? Not my favorite.

I watched Me Before You the movie before I read the book which might have been my mistake here. However, I didn’t really like the movie either. Sure it’s emotional and romantic and everything but I found it a little too cliche for my taste.

Louisa is a quirky and bubbly protagonist that is meant to contrast Will after his accident. I actually liked Louisa’s character in the book a lot more than the movie because the book showed how smart she actually was, even when she wasn’t willing to apply her brilliance anywhere but to help her family.

I actually loved Will’s character. Although he’s grumpy and reserved and often downright nasty, the moments where he’s witty, funny and sarcastic just made my day. Will is such a uniquely amazing character that you can’t help but sympathize with his plight.

The reason I didn’t quite enjoy the book was it seemed to get lost in too many unnecessary details. After a while, the very act of reading the book seemed laborious as it kept stretching on and on pointlessly.

I don’t think I’ll be picking up the sequel, After You, in a while. Overall, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes gets 3 out of 5 stars from me.

  1. I read Me Before You this yea and I loved it, haha. But I do understand your point about it going on and on.
In After You there was a plot twist I wasn’t expecting so you might like it..I don’t know though.
I loved Will too! I know some people didn’t like him but he was good for me when I read it. I wasn’t doing so well and his character made me laugh 🙂

    • After you has a plot twist?! I might just have to read it now. And yes Will is one of my all-time favorite characters! I’m glad you liked the book. I suppose the fact that I watched the movie before I read the book must have colored my opinion because everyone else seems to love Me Before You.
